Authorities in Weining County, Guizhou Province, have launched a drone-based agricultural logistics program covering 12 key villages and townships where the county’s main potato plantings are concentrated, investing 13.01 million yuan (about USD 1.8 million) to build service infrastructure and train 120 certified local drone operators. The technology addresses the county’s long-standing challenges of scattered plots, difficult transport, and low efficiency in its mountainous terrain at roughly 2,200 meters above sea level. Drones carrying 50–75 kg can cover one kilometer in two to three minutes, with a single unit moving 15–20 tons per day, cutting labor costs by 45% and reducing spraying and fertilizing time from 15 days to four. During a January 2026 demonstration, a drone carrying 67.5 kg of potatoes covered 850 meters in just 90 seconds, underscoring the system’s speed and precision.

By September 2026, as the mass harvest began, mechanized harvesting was running in parallel with drone logistics. Altogether, low-altitude technologies have been used to treat 85,000 mu (approximately 5,667 hectares) of crops and transport 7,520 tons of agricultural products. The results are notable given that the county’s total potato planting area stands at 1.5 million mu (100,000 hectares), with gross output expected to reach 3 million tons. Local authorities are presenting the initiative as a “Weining model” for mountainous agriculture across Guizhou Province, demonstrating how drone transport and application can overcome terrain barriers that heavy machinery cannot.
